As a way to further detail the practical side of branding, I’ve called upon artists, music executives, and creatives to discuss their brands. Every Thursday, the “Brand Your Music” column will feature interviews from varying perspectives. If you are an artist, music executive, or creative interested in being interviewed, please send all inquiries to askmeaboutmusic@gmail.com.
This week, Brand Your Music interviewed the ATL Smasherz. An Atlanta based rap group known for their brand of good music, strong messages, and their overall ability to “smash” everything they touch.
How would you describe the ATL Smasherz brand?
ATL Smasherz music is urban in terms of its sound and it reaches to “the lil’ ones to their legal guardians,” as quoted from Nayo Smash in the song entitled “Money Pile Up” on the 2012 mixtape. ATL Smasherz are the new coming of age artists. The new generation of artists that produce good music. In our opinion, the current music industry is like a cycle or an atom because everything has its positives and its negatives. Our music is on the positive side.
ATL Smasherz’s music has the potential to move the masses. It’s real feel good music and no matter what your age or gender, you can relate to the message. Our music speaks to all human beings.
What sets your music a part from other hip-hop artists?
The message in our music is not trendy and its not what’s currently hot in hip-hop. It comes from the heart and it basically sheds light on the experiences of black people struggling in the hood and in this country. It is a reoccurrence of experiences told through the artists, Nayo and Vip Smash. Therefore, no one can share what we have to share because no one has been through what we’ve been through. Our music represents who we are.
I’ve recognized that quite a few people take on the last name “Smash”. Describe the Smasherz movement and what it represents.
Smasherz is a movement that was created from a family base, a group of individuals that collectively exceed expectations. No matter what it is that you take on, whether its writing, singing, poetry, language, etc. you do it well. You “smash” it. To “smash” is to do it with the best of your ability and to supersede the competition. Its the same as saying you’ve done away with something or “killed” it.
The group itself, consists of two solo artists: Nayo Smash and Vip Smash with a team of individuals that support them. We have our producer, Toon Smash of Str8 Drop Keyz Productions, our Manager Assata Smash, our Publicist Zaki Smash, our model Ashton Breon, and finally our Business Consultant, Dub Smash. We all work together to bring to life the Smasherz vision and that is to influence music listeners positively and shed light on the issues of young black people.
What is the Smasherz latest project?
ATL Smasherz 2012 mixtape by Nayo and Vip is the first mixtape under the ATL Smasherz Entertainment Company. It’s currently available for download at www.datpiff.com. Coming in May 2011, is the second mixtape by Nayo and Vip entitled “Smasher Island” and that will also be available on www.datpiff.com.
